Charging Ahead with Electrification: Comparing Load Flexibility in Norway, Great Britain, and the US

Distribution grid flexibility, including demand response, demand-side management (DSM) programs, and non-wires alternatives (NWAs), leads to higher grid utilization, traditional asset deferral, customer empowerment, grid resilience, faster grid connections, and critically: lower costs for customers. As U.S. states consider how to incorporate load flexibility, international examples can provide useful resources, experiences, and lessons learned.

The CHARGED Initiative – a partnership formed by Advanced Energy United, GridLab, and RMI to advance affordable electrification – studied international approaches to load flexibility to understand how they can be applied to the U.S. context.

Panelists – each with experience working on grid flexibility in several countries, including Norway, Finland, Great Britain, Canada, and the U.S. – will share what they have learned from implementing distribution flexibility projects and discuss how efforts in the U.S. can scale to deliver customer benefits. Audience members will get opportunities to ask their own questions and learn more from our expert panel.
